Bitcoin ETF Outflows Hit $643M, but BlackRock Bucks Trend

TLDR

  • Bitcoin ETF outflows reached $643.2 million on October 30, erasing four days of inflows and pushing October into negative territory.
  • BlackRock’s IBIT led Friday’s withdrawals but still finished the month with $932.1 million in net inflows.
  • Ether funds also faced selling, with combined Bitcoin and Ether ETF withdrawals approaching $799 million for the session.

Bitcoin ETF outflows ended October with a sharp reversal, but the headline withdrawal figure masks a significant difference between BlackRock and its competitors.

U.S. spot Bitcoin funds recorded $643.2 million in net withdrawals on October 30, according to Farside Investors’ Bitcoin ETF flow data. The selling erased the previous four sessions’ combined inflows and turned both the week and the month negative.

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, or IBIT, accounted for the largest single-fund withdrawal on Friday. Yet it remained positive across both reporting periods, underscoring how uneven demand has become across the market.

The result leaves investors with two distinct signals: a broad retreat at month-end and continued monthly net inflows into the largest Bitcoin ETF.

Bitcoin ETF Outflows Reverse Four Days of Buying

Friday’s withdrawals followed $440.8 million in combined inflows between October 26 and October 29.

The week began with $110.3 million on Monday, followed by $176 million on Tuesday and $137.3 million on Wednesday. Buying slowed to $17.2 million on Thursday before the final session reversed those gains.

Bitcoinist previously covered the Bitcoin ETF rebound that brought in $176 million on Tuesday. Friday’s figures show how quickly that recovery lost momentum.

IBIT recorded $233.7 million in net withdrawals during the final session. Fidelity’s FBTC followed with $201 million, while ARK 21Shares’ ARKB lost $129.5 million.

Those three funds accounted for approximately 87.7% of the day’s net outflows. Grayscale’s GBTC recorded another $53.3 million in withdrawals, and Bitwise’s BITB lost $25.7 million.

None of the other Bitcoin products in Farside’s table registered a positive flow for the session.

The withdrawal left the funds with a $202.4 million weekly net outflow. It was also the largest daily exit since June, exceeding the $635.6 million withdrawn on October 22.

BlackRock nevertheless retained a positive weekly balance. IBIT had attracted $410.6 million during the first four sessions, leaving $176.9 million in net inflows after Friday’s selling.

Fidelity finished the week with $166 million in net withdrawals. ARKB’s $129.5 million Friday outflow represented its entire weekly loss.

These differences matter because an aggregate outflow does not mean every fund experienced the same demand pattern across the week.

BlackRock’s Positive October Highlights the Divide

The monthly figures make that split even clearer.

According to crypto.news’ analysis of the October ETF flows, rounded daily totals put Bitcoin ETF outflows at $515.9 million for the month. Before the final trading session, October had remained positive by $127.3 million.

IBIT, however, finished October with $932.1 million in net inflows. The remaining Bitcoin funds collectively recorded approximately $1.45 billion in net withdrawals.

Friday therefore reduced BlackRock’s monthly gains without wiping them out.

The figures do not establish why investors redeemed shares or whether money leaving one product subsequently entered another. They do show that demand remained concentrated, with BlackRock attracting net capital over a month when the overall category contracted.

That distinction complements our reporting on changing ownership among long-term Bitcoin ETF investors. Daily flows capture subscriptions and redemptions, while ownership research helps explain the different types of investors participating in the market.

Selling also extended to Ether products. Those funds recorded $155.7 million in Friday withdrawals, bringing combined Bitcoin and Ether ETF outflows to $798.9 million.

Ether funds finished all five sessions of October 26–30 negative, with weekly withdrawals totaling $431.4 million. Their October net outflows reached approximately $1.61 billion.

Even after the latest selling, cumulative net inflows into U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs stood at approximately $57.05 billion since their January 2024 launch.

The month-end reversal is substantial, but it does not erase that accumulated capital or establish what happens next. The next sessions will show whether withdrawals persist and whether BlackRock continues attracting enough demand to offset part of the selling elsewhere.

October’s defining contrast is clear: Bitcoin ETFs ended the month losing capital overall, while IBIT still brought in nearly $1 billion.
